July 8, 2013

View of the day-While stopped outside Holdrege, NE to check things over, a crew passes us heading north.

Another exciting day of moving...no break downs, thank goodness.  We got the camper packed up and left Phillipsburg, KS before the heat could catch us and headed for Nebraska to get the General and its latest load.

Once we had grabbed a snack and the General had aired up, we took off for Taylor, NE which would be the next break in our travel north.  We waved as we went by the combine and header at Ansley, then decided we would try a different road to get around the bridge construction.  This was 75 miles around, instead of the 35 straight through on the 183. But what's a few more miles between friends?

This got us up to Taylor...not in record time...but at least we were there with one load. Now where to park things? We haven't stopped here at all throughout the years, so we weren't sure exactly where to go.  Marilyn looked around town and found a side street that looked safe enough for Al to drop the tractor and cart.  While he got the trailer unhooked, she found the campground and got the camper flanged in so the A/C could cool it down while we were gone.

After that was done, we took off again, Al in the General and Marilyn in the pickup.  We didn't have to take the detour because we weren't over width and when we got to the other side of the bridge that they were working on, Al went into a fertilizer sales place to see if there was another "local" detour. There was, and he mapped it out for Al...this would shave 40 miles off the return trip.

We got to Ansley, fueled up both rigs, got the header and the combine trailer hooked up and took a tea break in the station to go over the "detour" map.  Then it was more of the same, but at least this time we would have a shorter trip.  We left Ansley, and headed north.

With Al's directions, Marilyn found the detour and it only added 7 miles to the trek...we were down to the last 15 miles.  Along the way, the last landmark to turn at was a few bins that had seen the wrath of the wind..."that had twisted them up like beer cans", according to the guy at the fertilizer joint.

We got back to Taylor, parked the rigs by the tractor and cart, then went for supper at the local Double D Cafe...it was excellent!  We got back to the camper, but because we only have 30 amp power, we can't use both A/C's...and now it's hot...and cranky. Looks like the generator is going to get some use, at least it will run both A/C's.

No news on the Freightliner yet...
