View of the day-Last fill for this trip at Great Bend, KS. Almost “home”.

We got an early start to the day…it was supposed to be the shortest day of this trip, but we decided to check out a detour for the bridge construction in Nebraska.

It was a great day for driving, there were enough clouds to keep it cool and there was a north wind to help us along. We stopped for a quick lunch in Bassett, NE then it was time to do the detour.  It turned out to be not too bad…it added an extra 40 miles to the journey…and the roads in Custer County could have used a little work…they were really rough.  Then there were the hills…something we don’t really notice that much when we go the tried and true route, although there are some dillys, these ones just seemed that much steeper. All in all, the detour will get the job done…unless of course the construction is done by the time we start back north.
By the time we hit Holdredge, it was time to stop for a malt at Sonic before continuing on. We stopped again at Phillipsburg and switched drivers, so Al could take a break and check his eyelids for cracks.

We stopped for fuel at Great Bend, then managed to hit the field with the “Landsharks” just north of St. John before the sun went down.

So far since we left Yorkton last Friday, we will have driven 3450 mi/5552 km.

Time to give the Dodge a rest…
