View of the day-What is it about these camper window and birds? This yellow fellow was singing at its reflection in the window for quite some time.
We were up early this morning to take the semi and General into Winner to dump the loads from last night. Marilyn had to dust off her truck driving hat and took the General in behind Al and the semi. We got to the elevator and had a bit of a wait, but got the job done and headed back to Winner.
When we got back to the field, Al unloaded the cart into the General and Marilyn took the tractor/cart into town and parked by the camper. Then Al took the last of Roger's wheat into the elevator and Marilyn took the Dodge in to fill the slip tank with fuel for the combine. After he was done at the elevator, Al met Marilyn at the card lock and we went to MacDonald's for an early lunch. Al went back to Hamill and waited for Marilyn at the next field, while she swung by the grocery store to grab a few things for supper and lunches. While at the store, there was a couple ahead of her buying groceries and the man said "Hey, didn't I just meet you driving a grain truck going north?" Small world.
Back at Hamill, Marilyn picked Al up at the field, then took the groceries back to the camper. With 100º+ temps in the forcast, the back seat of the Dodge was not a good place for the milk. We went out to the combine, put the header into transport and move over to the first field for Cal. He was out there with his pickup, so once Marilyn got the header on and started cutting, the guys got the rest of the stuff moved over.
We were binning most of the wheat for Cal at the bin site which was 1/2 mile away from the first field, so Al was able to really heap the General...not a good idea. On his second load to the bin, one of the air bags on the back suspension blew out, which meant it could get used for a light load to the bins, but that was it until a new one could be found and put on.
This meant the Freight had to come out of retirement.
We had taken it out to the first field of Roger's...just in case...and that is where it was still sitting, waiting to go back to town where it could live Al's dream of sitting and watching the traffic go by. Not this year.
To take some of the pressure off the grain auger, Al was running the odd load into Winner and now he was doing it with the Freight...in the 100º heat. There were a couple of good points about using the Freight, one-it could haul more than the General, and two-Al claims that no matter how hot it is outside, when you get out of the Freight...it always feels cooler. With the cabover, you sit right on top of the engine.
Combines were rolling across the road from us...they had roaded out from Winner this morning and we had passed them a couple times on our runs into town.
Cal had his two ton running and it held a full hopper from the combine perfectly, so there was no down time for Marilyn. We finished along the hills, then moved down across from the bin site and by then everyone was ready to call it quits for the day...it was only 8pm, but not everyone was able to be in a climate controlled environment...as Al put it.
We got the rest of the stuff moved over from the other field, got a load on the Freight for the morning and headed for the camper and a much needed shower.
Looks like we will get finished in time to see the fireworks on the river...
